Day 5 – Sun, sun, sun, here it comes

Today we didn’t go anywhere! And it was wonderful.

Unfortunately, Ross REALLY didn’t go anywhere today. Something from the Brazilian steak house disagreed with him and he was up for awhile last night, then stayed in bed until late afternoon today. Now though he seems to be bouncing back, and it looks like he’ll be joining in everything again tomorrow.

Sharon and I were up at about 7:30am this morning and by 8 we were down at the buffet to have breakfast with Scott and Lynn. We checked on the kids and while Ross was clearly not going anywhere, Mimi also opted to sleep awhile longer – she’d looked after Ross until 3am without calling us (“What were you going to do? watch? I could do that.”). Big hero points to Mimi.

After breakfast we decided that this would be a great day just to enjoy the tropical breeze, the sand and the surf. We retrieved our reading materials from our rooms and camped out for the balance of the morning on the outdoor wicker furniture in one of the breezeways near the lobby. At some point Scott and Lynn opted for a siesta (Lynn continues to fight a bit of a head cold) and a little while later Mimi appeared, ready to meet the day.

Mimi, Sharon and I played a game of 5 Crowns together (Sharon managed a come from behind victory), and Scott and Lynn reappeared for lunch. We lounged over our meal and made the monumental decision that we would actually do more reading and sitting about on the beach this afternoon. That seemed like a big step for me, so I had a nap first.

We’re very busy appreciating our environment.

A little while later I found everyone camped out not too far from a snack and drink bar on the beach – Scott, Lynn and Mimi had just come back in from another round of snorkelling where they had seen 7 turtles! Books were read, trips to the outdoor buffet were made, Bubba kegs were filled – it was a fine afternoon.

Sharon checked in again on Ross while Mimi and I took a dip in the salt water pool near the beach, and a little while later Sharon appeared again with Ross! He was a bit shaky on his feet but smiling and happy to be out of his room. Sharon took him to the buffet to tempt him with a bit of food before we all went back upstairs to change out of our swimwear.

MORE great food? Okay!

MORE great food? Okay!

Ross opted not to come down to the gourmet restaurant with the rest of us, but dinner was a fine affair with white table cloths, multiple waiters and lots of attention to presentation. The food was very good – I had a goats cheese and salmon salad, vichyssoise, and a beef sirloin cooked beautifully. Fish dishes and ravioli entres also got good reviews from our crowd. All of which was topped off with a chocolate fondant that earned all the stars.

After dinner we drifted back up to our rooms where Ross joined us for another evening of cards – tonight we played a new variation of Flux: Star Flux – where crewmen are expendable (naturally) and the rules change to any number of science fiction themes. Scott won both games!

And after having sat around being silly for the balance of the night, we decided to pack it in and get a good sleep in before deciding whether we would launch an assault on Playa del Carmen tomorrow. Stay tuned!
